Kernan relies on the energy, expertise and kindness of its dedicated volunteers. Our volunteers may spend their time at Kernan visiting our patients as well as working in the gift shop or in offices. Kernan's volunteers range from high school students (you must be at least 14 years of age) to senior citizens.

We work carefully to match the interests and skills of our volunteers with the needs that exist throughout the hospital. Opportunities are varied and available to anyone who wants to learn and to experience the joy of helping others.

Why should I volunteer?

When you volunteer at Kernan, you can design your own schedule and select the area in which you would like to volunteer. The best rewards come from the patients, their families and the staff at Kernan whom you assist when you volunteer.

Other benefits include:

  • Meal coupon when a volunteer works a minimum of four hours
  • Free flu shot
  • Free parking

The following steps are part of the volunteer application process:

  1. Download and read the informational letter (14KB, 1 pg.) Acrobat that outlines the program.
  2. Download and complete the following documents:
  3. Return the completed forms to:

    Cynthia Miller, CAVS
    Kernan Hospital
    Customer and Community Services

  4. Complete interview with department head (they will call you to schedule).
  5. If selected, attend an orientation with the department head.
  6. A health screening is required and is free to volunteers.

If you prefer, you may request a volunteer application online. Upon receiving your information, an application packet will be sent to you with the necessary items needed to become a volunteer.

Please note that any volunteers working with the patients must be at least 18 years old. We ask for an initial commitment of three (3) hours per week for six (6) months or at least 100 hours if volunteering less than six months. Some positions require volunteers to be at least 18 years of age.
